Let God Show you the way
I used a lesson from Interlink.
How many cosmetic surgery procedures do you think the Guinness World Record holder has already endured? The answer is over 100!
Write as many procedures as you can in two minutes. (our winner had eight.) Why do people have plastic surgery? To change their appearance so that others see them differently. What is your definition of beauty. While I'm looking for a discussion on outward appearance, my class is very smart and answered "It is how you are on the inside."
Let's listened to the song "More Beautiful You" by Jonny Diaz. View video and listen

Little girl fourteen flipping through a magazine
Says she wants to look that way
But her hair isn’t straight her body isn’t fake
And she’s always felt overweight

Well little girl fourteen I wish that you could see
That beauty is within your heart
And you were made with such care your skin your body and your hair
Are perfect just the way they are

Chorus
There could never be a more beautiful you
Don’t buy the lies disguises and hoops they make you jump through
You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do
So there could never be a more beautiful you

Little girl twenty-one the things that you’ve already done
Anything to get ahead
And you say you’ve got a man but he’s got another plan
Only wants what you will do instead

Well little girl twenty-one you never thought that this would come
You starve yourself to play the part
But I can promise you there’s a man whose love is true
And he’ll treat you like the jewel you are (chorus)

So turn around you’re not too far
To back away be who you are
To change your path go another way
It’s not too late you can be saved
If you feel depressed with past regrets
The shameful nights hope to forget
Can disappear they can all be washed away
By the one who’s strong can right your wrongs
Can rid your fears dry all your tears
And change the way you look at this big world
He will take your dark distorted view
And with His light He will show you truth
And again you’ll see through the eyes of a little girl (chorus)

The two girls in this song are the same girl just seven years apart. We live in a society who sees airbrushed magazine cover girls and where teens and even pre-teen girls starve themselves. Many families spend large amounts of money on beauty products and the latest fashions trying to fit in the world's definition of beauty. Which leads us to the question "Is all of that required to be truly Beautiful? The Bible tells us that you are beautiful without any enhancements.

Psalm 139: 13-16 For you created my inmost being;

you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

      I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

your works are wonderful,

I know that full well.

       My frame was not hidden from you

when I was made in the secret place.

When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

       your eyes saw my unformed body.

All the days ordained for me

were written in your book

before one of them came to be.1

Has God ever messed up? If not, why do people think they have bodily flaws? Who or what is making your peers feel flawed? To whom should we listen: God, or a bunch of business people looking to make money off you not feeling good about yourself?

Genesis 1:26-28  Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

    So God created man in his own image,

       in the image of God he created him;

      male and female he created them.

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”1

How does knowing that God created you in His own image make you feel?  Do you need to improve what God has already created in His image in order to be beautiful?

1 Peter 3:3-4  Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.1

What are clothes, makeup, and jewelry supposed to do? Can outward changes fix a person’s personality, attitude, or low self-esteem? Where does true beauty come from? 1 Peter 3 says true beauty “…should be that of your inner self…”

2 Corinthians 4: 6-7 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”  made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.1

Our bodies are as fragile as jars of clay and our outward beauty ages to show that our real power, our true beauty, comes from God and not us!

Will you look the same in twenty years? In Forty years? What can get more beautiful with age? True beauty, your inner beauty, gets better with age. You should continue to grow in faith and improve your attitude and personality as we get older. Where can you continually find your true beauty? We must look to God to fill us and give us true beauty.

Proverbs 31:30  Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;

but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.1

Our charm can get us in trouble, and our outward appearance will surely fade, the wisest thing to do to keep our true beauty is to praise the Lord always.

Have you ever been flirty or dressed a certain way just to get someone’s attention? Have you noticed that your skin and body have changed dramatically since you were a baby? It’s hard to live in this society today that puts so much impossible ideas of beauty. Especially since the ageing process is so cruel. Isn’t it comforting to know that God doesn’t put those expectations on us, that God says your true beauty isn’t based on your body?

Let’s pray: Heavenly Father, there could never be a more beautiful me. I am created in Your image. I won’t buy the beauty lies this world wants me to believe. I was fearfully and wonderfully made to fill a purpose for you that only I can fill. Please change the way I look at this world. Take my distorted view and shine Your light on it. Help me to see and live through the true inner beauty that only you can give me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
